As many companies experience the fallout from the economic downturn, data centers worldwide are expected to see massive growth, according to a recently released study by DatacenterDynamics, a London-based research firm.
The study, the DatacenterDynamics Global Industry Census 2011, is based on more than 5,000 interviews with officials from around the globe. According to the firm, these officials oversee around 100,000 data centers.
In the survey, "growth" means the construction and extension of data center facilities, as well as increases in outsourcing. The growth is expected to occur most in developing markets, including South East Asia, Turkey and China.
"The seven markets which indicate the greatest increase in facilities and racks are all developing economies where the existing data center infrastructure is currently not adequate to cope with IT capacity requirement," the company explains.
"Imagine what might happen when India and China get the pedal to the metal in terms of data center growth and the effect that will have upon global energy consumption in the sector," George Rockett, a co-founder of DatacenterDynamics, told the New York Times about the study.
According to the study, industry experts are most concerned about the cost and energy needs associated with running data centers. More companies are turning to alternative energies for powering their data centers. As a result, data center growth in Nordic countries, the company says, may be caused by growing renewable energy resources there.
DataCenterDynamics cites several reasons why data centers seem to be surviving the global recession. These include the rising number of Websites, Internet users and smartphone owners. The company also notes that world governments and businesses are depending more and more on IT.
As noted, more data centers inevitably means more energy usage. To meet the demand for energy, businesses must start to think outside the box when it comes to power. Data furnaces, for example, could save space and use the wasted heat from servers to heat homes.
