Last spring "Smarter Technology" discussed the promise of Streetline, a parking-solutions company that aims to cut carbon emissions with tools to reduce parking time. Now, Streetline has teamed with IBM to bring rich parking-related data and analytics to cities.
The new collaboration will combine parking sensors and applications from Streetline with information management and advanced analytics from IBM. The companies hope to enable cities to make timely and accurate decisions about their transportation systems.
Recent research from IBM underscored the massive hassle of parking around the world. According to its global study of commuters in 20 cities, “nearly six out of 10 drivers had abandoned their search for a parking space at least once and drivers have spent an average of nearly 20 minutes in pursuit of a coveted spot.”
Streetline has already been working to improve the quality of parking with various mobile phone applications and on-street sensors. Its free application, Parker, lets drivers know where spaces are available and how much they cost. Now, with IBM’s help, the company will be using historical and real-time data to help cities plan for parking needs.
“Today, there is a massive amount of transportation data available that can help cities alleviate congestion and improve transportation services, such as parking,” Gerry Mooney, general manager of global Smarter Cities at IBM, said in a statement. “It’s critical for cities to be able to turn this data into information and insight so they can anticipate and avoid situations that cause congestion, while simultaneously improving the services they provide citizens and businesses.”
The collaboration will enable cities to analyze information about parking systems in order to optimize revenue from meters, garages and other sources. It should also help cities manage large events and changes in parking availability.
“Parking is one of those universal challenges that most people around the globe can relate to,” Zia Yusuf, president and CEO of Streetline, said in a statement. “With this fully integrated offering, cities now have a turnkey Smarter Parking solution that can produce tangible results and happier citizens.”
