GPS technology has helped millions of individuals find the best route to avoid traffic, help locate lost outdoor enthusiasts and more. There are very few downsides to GPS. In Africa, conservationists have found one more excellent use for this technology—preventing poachers from reaching black rhinos.

The black rhino is a critically endangered
species.
The Plight of Rhinos
While it may not seem that an animal as big as this one would have to worry about much, rhinos are frequently the targets of poachers, even on protected game reserves. By drilling a small hole in the inert part of the horn, park officials in the Mafikeng Game Reserve are testing GPS technology with five of their protected rhinos to help evaluate whether this might be the best tool to stop thousands of animals across the globe from falling into the hands of poachers.
