A basic search for "global warming" on Twitter will uncover thousands of hits from people on both sides of the argument. For a would-be debater, that's a lot of tweets to follow. Software developer Nigel Leck decided to use his IT skills to gain some leverage in the climate battles. Fed up with responding to tweets from climate change deniers, Leck designed a Twitter robot to do it for him.
The "chatbot" @AI_AGW searches Twitter every five minutes for posts that refute global warming. The program is trained to detect common signs of denial, such as posts about how Earth is actually cooling or that humans aren't to blame.
The
Twitter robot responds to climate change deniers by providing links to
scientific evidence. If users answer, it can reply with fresh content.
Once the robot finds a post, it automatically tweets back with a retort from a huge database. The responses are customized to the original tweet and contain links with appropriate scientific backing. After a user posted about global cooling, for example, @AI_AGW wrote "Hottest September in UAH satellite record" with a link to the evidence. The response database contains tweets written by Leck and from university sources.
The robot's responses are adapted enough that most users think a real person has responded. If a twitterer continues to send messages to @AI_AGW, the robot will respond with fresh tweets and links.
