If you've ever been to a hospital's emergency room, you know how unorganized, inefficient and stressful it can be. Now, researchers think they may have found a solution to the ER's many problems via robotics.
A team of computer engineers at Vanderbilt University recently argued that current robotics technology is advanced enough to be implemented in ER and other hospital situations. Working in an interdisciplinary team with emergency specialists from Vanderbilt University Medical Center, the engineers explored the possible benefits of applying robots to critical, emergency situations.
In the team's hypothetical model, robots are used throughout the patient treatment process. The machines gather medical history and symptom information, take basic diagnostic tests, and even suggest possible diagnoses to doctors. The researchers believe that robots could alleviate many of the ER's problems—from long waits to overworked personnel to dangerous mistakes. The team states that today's robotics technology is already sophisticated enough for use in emergency rooms.
"Advances in humanoid robotic design, in sensor technology, and in cognitive control architectures now make such a system feasible," said Mitch Wilkes in a press release. Wilkes is an associate professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Vanderbilt.
Karen Miller, senior associate in Emergency Medicine at the university, was enthusiastic about the project as well. "When the engineers approached us with this idea, we were thrilled,” she said in the release. “We thought their ideas were really interesting, and we like the idea of developing new and innovative ways of doing things."
According to Miller, up to 40 percent of patients arrive at ERs with potentially fatal conditions. Although these critical patients must be treated immediately by human doctors and nurses, the robotic system, nicknamed TriageBot, could handle the other 60 percent of non-fatal cases.
