  As "going green" becomes more and more trendy, developers are taking advantage of the movement and creating environmental applications for mobile devices. Unfortunately, many of these applications are only hype and have limited functions and environmental impact. We've weeded through the overgrown garden of green apps to bring you the 10 most useful. Download these to find green products, reduce your carbon footprint and even plant trees!

  Carbon Tracker (Free)

  This app enables you to chart your carbon footprint. When traveling, just select your mode of transit—bus, sedan, etc.—and let the app do the rest of the work. It uses your iPhone's GPS feature to calculate distances and allows you to set monthly carbon goals.

  Find Green (Free)

  When on the go, it can be hard to know what businesses support your environmentally minded lifestyle. Find Green provides a huge directory of eco-friendly businesses like organic grocery stores, sustainable dry cleaners and green yoga studios.

  greenMeter ($5.99)

  Use this app while driving to calculate fuel usage, increase efficiency and reduce your environmental impact. The app measures your vehicle's movement using the accelerometer and provides instant feedback. Although six bucks might seem expensive for an app, greenMeter, which will reduce fuel costs, boasts that it "can pay for itself within 1-2 tanks of gas."

  Get Green ($0.99)

  While there are many apps that provide eco-tips, Get Green is one of the best. The app, which provides daily tips for going green, allows you to save and e-mail your favorite entries. It's even seasonally oriented—in October, for example, you can learn how to host a planet-friendly Halloween party.
