New molecular fingerprinting technology may prove incredibly useful to a number of different industries. Thanks to a discovery of laser-based techniques that actually pull hydrogen molecules from other particles in a matter of seconds, this technology could be used in everything from disease diagnosis to security applications that help to make our world much safer.
Scientists at the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics, or JILA, developed the new technology around an optical frequency comb. It is created by lasers that have the ability to see a massive range of colors within light. From there, researchers can locate specific molecules based on the colors that are absorbed by a given gas. Because the light passes through any given gas mixture a number of times, the level of sensitivity in terms of detection is quite high. Each concentration can then be measured because of the molecular signature. So far, the process seems to work quite quickly and accurately, even when there are confusing elements involved.
