Calculating the probability of something complex usually requires a mathematical equation, a data processor and the use of a highly intelligent mind.
That might change, however, thanks to a small technology company based in Massachusetts called Lyric Semiconductor. This impressive startup company says that it has created a less expensive and more energy-efficient model to figuring out probability calculations normally conducted by digital processors.
Using less space and less power than a standard digital processor, Lyric Semiconductor's new circuit design conducts probability processing in parallel rather than through a series of calculations. Additionally, the new circuit design is able to process those "in-between" numbers that are normally found in precise probability calculations, while most data processing systems can only provide single-digit numbers.
Getting a
precise calculation is necessary when you are trying to estimate probability.
Thus, the ability to reduce numeric errors is an important breakthrough.

Many companies use probability calculations to estimate future quarter earnings, consumer activity and more. Having a more effective and accurate way to calculate probabilities would be extremely valuable in these areas, especially when the demand for a faster way to gain access to information and store data is at an all-time high.
The founders of Lyric Semiconductor hail from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, one of the most respected technological institutions in the country. They view this circuit design as an opportunity to expand on certain aspects of technology that is already available.
If the new circuit design is effective, it could have a profound impact on the technology industry as a whole, because a new approach to standard data compression has the potential to lead to other significant technological developments as well. With a much faster and far less expensive way of collecting, calculating and storing data, Lyric Semiconductor's new design has the potential to change the probability calculation game for everyone.
