Back-to-school means more than just stocking up on pencils and notebooks these days. (Well, in the case of the latter, we mean the spiral-bound kind). Here are several tech innovations that will be making an impact in the classroom this fall:
● Mobile
apps will get a higher profile in the classroom this year. Merriam-Webster has made its dictionary collection—including
Webster's Collegiate, Third International, Unabridged and Pocket—available for the
iPad and other mobile devices. They include the same content as the print
versions and even feature professional live-voice pronunciations of the words.
And the SPARKvue App allows students to measure scientific qualities such as temperature, force and carbon-dioxide levels by connecting a sensor to the iPad, iPhone or iPod via a Bluetooth wireless interface. Here, data can be collected and displayed in graphs, digits and meters and summarized with statistics.
● Didn't you always hate it when the teacher called on you to answer a question in class and you just sat there frozen like a deer in headlights? You were far from alone. Thanks to the CPS Pulse student response pad from eInstruction, these awkward moments will be greatly reduced. The pad allows students to electronically answer questions or participate with peers in classroom instructions. It also lets teachers detect immediately which students are struggling with material, which is especially valuable for kids with learning disabilities.
