Distracted driving—the cause of 20 percent of all U.S. highway fatalities—is especially dangerous when the distracted driver is behind the wheel of a 100,000-pound tractor-trailer. But just as technology can be the vehicle of distraction, it can also be used to keep a truck driver's eyes, hands and mind from wandering.

Aware of the danger of a crash and the threat of litigation, some fleet owners are taking measures to prevent their employees from talking or texting while driving. They're installing software on their truckers' cell phones that goes into action when the phone is in a rig moving faster than 5 mph. The app then diverts all calls to voicemail and withholds text messages until the truck is no longer in motion. The software also prevents outgoing calls except to 911 and other authorized numbers.
Illume Software's iZUP is one such program. It works with most cell phones (Sorry, hipster trucker: no iPhone version yet) and is activated by GPS. iZUP will alert a manager if a trucker tries to disable the software or tries to shut off the GPS device.
The Jankovich Company, a petrol-products distributor in California, has installed iZUP on its truckers' handsets. "We wanted to go beyond policy and training ... and use technology to completely eliminate the temptation for our drivers to use or to be distracted by cell phones while driving," a Jankovich executive told Mobile Enterprise.
