Future Internet Architecture (FIA) ideas were solicited by the National Science Foundation earlier this year. The call challenged the science and engineering communities to propose novel long-range collaborative concepts that harness network architectural innovations to meet the increasing interplay between the social and economic issues facing the 21st century.

The FIA efforts aim to develop a more robust, secure and reliable Internet experience for users, as mandated by the NSF's Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE). The four awards will enlist the collaborative efforts of more than a dozen research institutions nationwide, all aimed at creating a more trustworthy and robust Internet as users and expectations rise over the rest of the decade.
The four three-year grants include funding for the design, prototyping and testing of these novel network architectures, and will combine the efforts of 60 researchers at more than 30 institutions across the United States:
● The Data Networking project, led by principal investigator Lixia Zhang at the University of California at Los Angeles, will attempt to reframe the client/server model for interactions into a three-tiered architecture for content creation, dissemination and delivery. The team's proposed Named Data Networking (NDN) architecture focuses on what the content contains rather than where it is stored. By accessing data by naming it, secure trustworthy data transmissions can be negotiated regardless of storage location. This allows for easier caching, optimized bandwidth by accessing the nearest copy, and the possibility of using multiple paths to a single destination.
