Here at Smarter Technology, we've been skeptical about the potential of the first-generation iPad. It never seemed quite powerful enough to replace the e-reader or be a great device for enterprise use. This month, Apple released the iPad 2, which features some major upgrades. The new device is thinner and lighter, and has a longer battery life than its predecessor. Here are our top reasons why IT professionals should now consider purchasing the device for business usage.
Twice as Fast: The original iPad had 206MB RAM, a number that was sharply criticized, particularly with the release of the iPhone 4, which had more memory. The new iPad 2 comes with 516 RAM, twice as much as the original. Apple's 1GHz A5 dual-core processor also has a 200MHz bus.
For IT professionals, these hardware improvements translate to smoother multitasking and better performance. Multiple browser tabs and applications can be open at once, without sacrificing speed. Particularly for IT managers and CIOs, who oversee several projects and issues at once, these hardware updates are critical and promising.
FaceTime: FaceTime,
Apple's face-to-face video calling tool, now works on the iPad. The newest
version of the device features two cameras, one on the front and one on the
back. Like on the iPhone, users can toggle between the two cameras to show
their own image or to share their surroundings.

While FaceTime makes an excellent video conferencing tool, it might be especially useful for IT professionals at the scene. A worker, for example, could send live video of a malfunctioning server to a manager helping to troubleshoot the problem. For off-site usage, the tool could cut travel costs and lead to more efficient IT organization.
Carrier Choice: In January, many Apple fans rejoiced when Verizon announced it was bringing its service to the iPhone. Now the iPad can be used with a Verizon data plan, too. For those who skipped the original iPad because it was exclusive to AT&T, this carrier choice may be a key change in making the purchasing plunge.
The new iPad also has a WiFi-only version, whose cheaper price makes it an ideal choice for IT professionals hoping to use the device mainly in-office.

Same Apps, Only Better: The updated hardware of the iPad 2, which now also has a gyroscope, means that the tool's apps will be smarter and faster than ever before. The Apple App Store currently stocks over 65,000 apps, with more added every day. Business-centric apps let users track projects and chart data securely while sharing information with select contacts.
Due to these exciting updates, the iPad 2 is already selling out in stores around the country. Have you purchased one or another type of tablet? How do you plan to use it for IT-related business?
