Last year, we published nearly 500 Smarter Technology articles and videos. The stories covered the wide range of new technologies being applied to improve the way organizations and their people work and compete in today's marketplace.
Certainly some themes emerged throughout the year. We saw the increased use of analytics, the rise of big data, the growing need to support a more mobile workforce and the rising influence of social media on businesses.
Here, briefly, are the top 10 most read Smarter Technology stories of the year.
1) Apple Spin-Off Hosts Enterprise App Stores: Since Apple announced its over-the-air protocol last year, enterprises from Cisco to Procter & Gamble have quietly opened their own private-label app stores, with the help of behind-the-scenes Apple spin-off Apperian.
2) Visualization Analytics Writ Large: An 80-foot-wide visualization display simultaneously tracks data streams from thousands of sensors to provide the real-time analytics necessary to balance a statewide electric grid, with telecommunications the next challenge.
3) Hundreds of U.S. Data Centers Closing: To save money, the U.S. government will shut down hundreds of data centers across the country and consolidate their services into its remaining data centers.
4) Smarter 3D Employs Eye Tracking: LG claims to have solved the problems with glasses-free 3D displays with a smarter eye-tracking technology that adapts to the viewing angle of the user. Available this fall in a 20-inch monitor, the smarter 3D solution eliminates the need for glasses and is compatible with normal 2D imagery.
5) Cloud Makes 3D Models From Aerial Photos: Cloud-based services are enabling fast, cheap, large-scale three-dimensional models of almost any landscape. The models are generated from easy-to-obtain aerial photos from drones—unmanned aerial vehicles.
6) Seven Reasons HTML5 Is Killing Flash: Seven inherent features in HTML5 are eliminating the need for Adobe Flash as well as enabling Websites to add capabilities that rival native applications.
7) 10 Smarter Enterprise Technologies That Will Have Big Impact in 2011: Here are the top picks for the smarter enterprise technologies that will have the biggest impact in 2011.
8) Autism Traits Prove Valuable for Software Testing: Smarter software-debugging services are being performed by savants where the intense focus and superlative technical abilities of high-functioning autism shine.
9) Smarter Atomic Clock on a Chip Debuts: Atomic clocks keep the world's processes on track—providing a universal time base with which everything from satellite communications to demolition explosions are synchronized. Now chip-scale atomic clocks are small enough to install inside mobile devices.
10) Why Smart Companies Should Adopt the Lessons of Gaming: Businesses today often need interdisciplinary approaches to tackle new challenges. This at a time when workforces are geographically dispersed, stretched thin and, in many cases, suffering from low morale. To engage employees and tap unrealized problem-solving potential, companies should be taking their playbook from the gaming community.
We plan to keep the coverage of smarter technologies going this year. And we always want to hear from our readers. So if you have any suggestions or comments, please chime in on our Facebook and Twitter pages. Or drop me a note here.
