This week, representatives from companies around the world have gathered at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to share ideas and innovations. This year’s show promises to be a coming-out party for the latest products and tools. One creation we’re looking most forward to is no-glasses 3D technology.
One entry in this field is from Stream TV Networks. Named Ultra-D, the company’s tech tool converts 2D to 3D images in real time. Unlike most other 3D tools, Ultra-D does not require users to wear glasses, which can cause hassle and discomfort.
The system uses a mix of hardware and software algorithms to create seamless 3D video. It works not only with Blu-ray and DVD, but also with images from computer games and the Internet. The tool can be used with televisions, computers, tablets and even picture frames.
Ultra-D also enables users to customize 3D settings to optimize picture and eye comfort.
“Our ultimate goal was to create a solution that addresses existing concerns impeding the adoption of 3D consumer aversion to expensive glasses, viewer discomfort, variance in individual vision and preference and the slow creation of 3D content,” Mathu Rajan, Stream TV CEO, said in a statement.
The company anticipates that the switch to 3D video will be a “phenomenon like the migration from black and white TV to color TV.”
The technology promises to address the major concerns critics currently have with 3D video—the glasses and the potential for discomfort. Price has been another setback, but because the tool works with existing machines, it is likely to be less expensive than other 3D technology.
Tools like this that convert video could become commonplace not only in homes, but also in the medical and military industries, where 3D imaging can aid in life-like training.
Other technologies being unveiled at CES include ultra-thin and portable televisions, waterproof smart phones, and 3D-printing innovations. Visit the CES Website to track announcements and read up on new tools. Also be sure to follow eWEEK’s coverage of the show.
