As the virtualization community convenes upon Moscone Center this week for VMworld, dozens of vendors will take the covers from a healthy line-up of new products and product updates designed to support virtualization efforts in the enterprise. The session agenda focuses heavily on matters of cloud computing, increasing virtualization density and improving performance of existing and future virtualization deployments. That’s huge considering the ubiquity of virtualization today. According to a recent update from VMware this month, during the first half of 2009, more than 21,000 new customers picked up VMware solutions alone, with VMware’s vSphere 4 seeing an average rate of 140 downloads per hour during the first three months of general availability.
Smarter Technology examines some of the biggest product
categories expected to change the face of the virtualization ecosystem as we
know it.
Private Cloud Enablement
According to a recent survey conducted by Information Technology Intelligence Corp (ITIC), only about 14 percent of enterprises plan on moving their data to a virtualized public cloud within the next six-to12 months. But that doesn’t mean that organizations aren’t untethering themselves in order to float away into the cloud—they’re just doing it internally via private clouds.
By taking a slight hit in flexibility and cost, enterprises can opt to take advantage of the agility and elasticity offered by the cloud while still maintaining control of the infrastructure through private cloud deployments. In order to do so, they’ll need a spate of virtualization tools and middleware to enable future projects—anticipate vendors large and small to hawk a cornucopia of private cloud enablement tools this week.
Rumblings of big announcements already started earlier in the month, when on August 15 VMware announced the acquisition of San Mateo, Calif.-based Spring Source, a web application development and management company that VMware says will help it better support cloud build-out. According to recent—but unconfirmed—murmurs from Forbes, we should expect to see big announcements from both VMware and Xen, who will each release private cloud tools. And last week Santa Clara, Calif.-based OpSource announced it will unveil OpSource Cloud at the show. The company touts this Virtual Private Cloud as a more controlled option for enterprise compared to public clouds.
Security and Governance
Security and governance of virtualized servers and other infrastructure has long been a hot button issue for risk-averse enterprises, acting as one of the major inhibitors for virtualization deployments within organizations otherwise eager to adopt.
In fact, two-thirds of information security professionals interviewed by the Ponemon Institute for its 2009 Security Mega Trends Survey released in January said they felt virtualization of computer resources increase information-security risks.
While there are sure to be security announcements and demos galore this week, the question remains whether or not enterprises will buy. A recent poll by Nemertes Research showed that 70 percent of organizations have no plans to deploy virtualization security tools in the near term.
Nevertheless, we’ve already seen some security announcements in the run-up to the show. For example, Mountain View-Calif.-based HyTrust last week rolled out HyTrust Appliance 1.5, which added virtualized infrastructure policy development and enforcement to its access control platform.
