As summer comes to a close and students settle into dorm rooms and classes, many colleges and universities are ushering in new technologies this fall. One of them is the Georgia Institute of Technology, a research university in Atlanta. The school's Communication and Marketing department has created an iPhone application that lets students, faculty and alumni connect to all aspects of campus life.
"Georgia Tech's new iPhone app is a communications tool that puts many of our everyday resources in the palm of your hand," said Georgia Tech President G. P. "Bud" Peterson in a university statement. "Users will be able to do everything from getting personalized, healthy dining recommendations to knowing in real time when the next Tech Trolley will arrive. It was designed by a Tech student working with our Communications and Marketing team, and is a reflection of our Institute's innovative environment."
For freshmen transitioning into the college lifestyle, the app might prove especially useful. To keep from getting lost, a new student might use the app's interactive campus map, which employs GPS to identify specific campus locations. The map even has photos of buildings to help students find their classrooms, dining halls, libraries and other facilities. Once students have located their destinations on the map, they can then use their phones to find convenient transportation options. The app provides a live schedule for the campus trolley with to-the-minute updates.
Bookworms
might find some relief from the app, which gives direct access to the
university's library catalog. Users can search for and reserve books with the
touch of a button. The app also shows where unused computers are available.
The
app lets users find the nearest bus, reserve books and buy tickets to sporting
events (source: Georgia Tech).
The app has several features to promote social interactions on campus. For example, it has an up-to-date calendar of school events. Users can watch videos from the university's YouTube channel or read an electronic version of The Technique, Georgia Tech's student-run newspaper. The app also provides the latest scores of athletic teams, and students can even use it to buy tickets to the games.
