We already point with our eyes, according to Tobii Technology, so why not track that information and use it as part of a user interface? The fourth biggest computer maker, Lenovo, agrees. Together, Tobii and Lenovo are perfecting a laptop computer that tracks your eyes.
Tobii already makes expensive eye trackers for researchers—from marketing to medical—but the deal with Lenovo should bring the price down low enough for consumer laptops.
The research prototypes—so far just 10 laptops at each company—combine the eye tracking technology developed at Tobii with the design and manufacturing expertise of Lenovo. The result is a laptop computer that tracks what your eyes are looking at on the screen.
Tobii Technology claims that its eye tracking technology can be used to
determine what anybody is viewing on a display, even a baby.
Unveiled this month at CeBIT, these 20 prototypes are the world's first laptops to integrate eye tracking into their user interface. The companies hope to use the prototypes to develop the technology into a commercial product.
"To reach a state where the technology is part of the average computer, we need to make it smaller and cheaper," said Henrik Eskilsson, CEO of Tobii Technology, at the CeBIT announcement. "We believe that this can be realized in a couple of years."
