Employees almost always have a cell phone on them in today's world, and in many cases, they use those cellular devices to help them keep up with work or stay connected when they're on a business trip. As we learned from Apple this year, though, keeping the data stored on those phones safe is an absolute must.
Fortunately, there are two things you can do to make certain the employees in your company don't make risky mistakes with their smartphones. First, insist the sensitive information is left off the phone. A few quick clicks could have your client list posted on every discussion forum online, and it's a mistake that could happen to any employee. From leaving the phone in a bar to clicking the wrong contact, keeping the sensitive data under literal lock and key is an absolute must. If any such information must be sent in this type of environment, make sure you've developed the appropriate protocol.
Another thing to make your employees aware of is free WiFi. Most travelers say that they utilize the free WiFi that they can find at public locations in order to use their mobile devices. But it's important that employees know that WiFi hot spots that are found in airports are the perfect places to have others watch their every move, as well as pick up viruses or other malware that are becoming an increasing concern to smartphones.
