The spectacular dreamscapes of "Inception" might not be as fantastical as you think (source: ScreenCrave).
"Inception," the sci-fi blockbuster du jour, sets the premise that our dreams are as significant and influential as our reality. Characters have such masterful control over their dreams (and potent drugs) that they can build and destroy cities, visit lost loves and travel to the far ends of the earth—all the while sleeping safely in their beds or nuzzled into the neck pillow of their airplane seat.
While the fantastic dream world of the film is unlikely to be a reality any time soon, lucid dreaming is a phenomenon that many experience and that you can teach yourself to achieve so as to tap your true inner self—or perhaps advance an innovative idea that's been percolating off and on within your brain. Although you could learn how to lucid dream the old-fashioned way—with simple mind exercises or a pad of paper—here at Smarter Technology, we think that the use of high-tech gadgets are much more fun. Check out these spoiler-free technologies that will have you controlling your dreams in no time.
Dream Diary
There's no point in having a lucid dream if you don't remember it, so dream recall is a vital first step. Most lucid dream gurus recommend keeping a dream diary, in which you track every dream you have. But a pen-and-paper diary sounds awfully outdated to those of us clinging to our iPads. Besides, you might not want your spouse or roommate flipping open a notebook to discover your slumber was spent dreaming of that high school crush or movie star. Well, as we're wont to expect, there's an app for that.

Forget
an unprotected paper diary. This app lets you peacefully and safely record your
dreams directly to your mobile device (source: Apple).
Dream Diary, which works on devices like the iPhone and Android, lets you record your dreams on a simple, secure interface. Although the app doesn't offer a lot of complex features, its password protection and diarylike entries get the job done. Its best aspect is perhaps its dim starry background, which is bright enough to type by but a lot dimmer than the overhead light required for writing by hand. Since the app won't stun your sleepy eyes, you'll be able to doze off again quickly if you wake up in the middle of the night.
