At the same time, MacDonald's take—whatever it turns out to be—is just one among many possible, a point the producers seem to be emphasizing by making the raw footage universally accessible. I wonder, indeed, why a more-explicit invitation hasn't been made to documentarists to create their own mash-ups of this material, unless it's a rights-management issue. Regardless of legalities, it's predictable that some motivated (and hopefully talented) bricoleurs will do so.
Meanwhile, it's addictively fascinating to explore this vast archive at random, or in some of the lightly structured ways offered. The individual atoms of material range from the ridiculous to the sublime; from the aimless and ad-hoc to the carefully produced; from the ego-driven and attention-getting to the purely and austerely reportorial. From what I can tell, dubious material (porn, hoax clips, spam) is entirely absent—evidence that some first-order filtration is happening in the background. So the archive may, in fact, be safe for use in schools.
This is devoutly to be wished, I think, since beyond the domain of assemblage and documentary interpretation, the "Life in a Day" archive is a perhaps-unprecedented resource for learning, social and physical science, economics, demographics, and governance. At the surface level, it articulates one technically empowered, Internet-connected segment of humanity's assertions about what people care about most, right now—pretty important information. At deeper levels, processed by digital tools, detail-extracted and normalized, what marvels might it illuminate?
