Not many markets can claim trillion-dollar sizes, besides the food industry and health care, but soon mobile communication will be joining that elite group. Worldwide equipment revenue for the mobile communications industry hit $235 billion in 2010 and will grow to over $359 billion by 2014, according to iSuppli (a wholly owned subsidiary of IHS).
Last year, the revenue from the global mobile communications equipment market grew 7.9 percent—up from $218 billion in 2009 to $235 billion—as a result of the aggressive expansion of the network infrastructure for mobile broadband deployment worldwide. Most of the expansion was in response to strong sales of 3G cell phones, the same force that will power even faster growth in 2011, in which revenues will for the first time in history pass the quarter-trillion-dollar mark. IHS' iSuppli predicts that in 2011 global mobile communications factory equipment will top $271 billion.

$359.3 billion by 2014, according to iSuppli.
Besides wireless broadband deployment for cell phones, other segments include cordless phones, battery chargers, mobile infrastructure, mobile and fixed broadband access devices, and wireless LAN equipment such as routers—all of which contributed to the bottom line.
Market researcher iSuppli predicts that growth will remain strong in these markets through 2014, enabling mobile communications to pass the one-third-trillion-dollar mark. In particular, iSuppli predicts a $359.3 billion global market by 2014, of which the largest single segment will be the 3G mobile handsets, which topped $86 billion in 2010, up 34 percent from $64 billion in 2009. Next were legacy 1G/2G handsets, which are still selling strong in Latin America, Asia and Africa, with revenues of $55 billion in 2010—down 18.6 percent from 2009, when 1G/2G handsets were $68 billion.
