We live in fear that our computers will become so filled
with malware and viruses that we’re unable to use them or repair them in
a timely manner. But could 2011 be the year when malware finally
strikes personal and company-issued cell phones and smartphones?
Over 80 million smartphones were sold in the third quarter of 2010, and
many of the cell phones sold have the capability of online access as
well. It has long been a worry that mobile malware will leap from the
pages of fantasy to become fact, but until now there has really been no
proof that it’s possible.
In September 2010, however, researchers uncovered a mobile option for a
well-known piece of malware that allows those who utilize it to steal
credentials for bank accounts. The malware goes by the name of Zeus.
This mobile malware was able to target BlackBerrys and Symbian Series 60
devices in order to intercept passcodes.
Researchers have also uncovered worms and applications known as rogue
dialers that can be sent via Bluetooth. And with more and more tablet
computers being utilized, it’s believed that there is going to be a much
larger threat of mobile malware hitting the air waves than there ever
has before, and that the fantasy of mobile malware is going to become a
reality.
