VoIP enables voice calls over the Internet—like the Skype app—by sending digitized audio over the same data channels used for Web pages and music downloads, potentially cutting long-distance calling costs to the price of your Internet connection. And with the widespread rollout of LTE mobile broadband by every major carrier, the telecoms have finally aligned their best interest with IT—enabling widespread deployment of mobile VoIP with nearly zero-cost long-distance service.
According
to In-Stat (Scottsdale, Ariz.), the number of mobile
users switching to VoIP will rise from just 21.4 million today to 221.9 million
in 2014.
Mobile VoIP will grow its user base 10 times over five years, resulting in over 221 million users by 2014, according to In-Stat (Scottsdale, Ariz.).
As those ranks swell, enterprises will increasingly switch over to VoIP using gateways capable of integrating voice, video and Internet on channels as high-fidelity and reliable as its ordinary voice channels.
Until now, mobile carriers resisted supporting VoIP clients because they did not want customers overloading their antiquated data channels, but starting in earnest in 2011 widespread mobile LTE broadband will be available—with VoIP the potential killer application to persuade users to sign up.
"As the ranks of mobile VoIP users rise, they are creating a significant opportunity for VoIP gateway equipment suppliers," said In-Stat market analyst Amy Cravens. "We expect expenditures for mobile VoIP gateway equipment to soar beyond the $6 billion mark in 2015."
